The Story
Moses led an extraordinary life. That he led any life at all is an extraordinary truth in and of itself. By the hand of God’s grace, Moses escaped death as a child, eventually being raised in the home of the same Pharaoh that had called for his death, under the care of that Pharaoh’s daughter. From there, the story of Moses moves from one incredible chapter to the next: adopted royalty, privileged youth, turned murderous fugitive… and anointed leader.
This song, “Moses,” steps inside the character of Moses and tells his story, from his perspective. The inner battles, the fear, the anxiety, and then the clarity of seeing God’s sovereignty over everything, even when it seemed out of control.
Lyrics
Moses
My story starts where it should have ended
A baby tucked in a pocket of reeds
Hoping to steal just a few more hours
Avoid the death that the Pharaoh decreed
It could have ended when that princess girl found me
But crying babes make a deafening plea
Two dimpled hands reaching out for mercy
And thank the Lord, she took mercy on me
I thank the Lord she took mercy on me
I never felt like I really belonged here
On hand and foot always waiting on me
Adopted son in the house of the Pharaoh
A Hebrew boy in the courts of a king
I look upon all my people in slavery
Their duties driven to a cruel degree
My indignation takes the life of another
The second time Pharaoh’s coming for me
This is the second time he’s coming for me
A wayward soul tending flock in the wilderness
It caught my eye, what a sight to see
A bush ablaze, yet unscathed, it was radiant
I heard my name, The Lord speaking to me
“I’ve heard the cries from my children of Israel
I’ve seen the tears of their misery
I know my plans for my children’s deliverance
Moses, my son, you will speak for me
You are my son and you will speak for me”
[Say] I hear, I know, I see
I hear, I know, I see
I hear, I know, I see
I AM will set you free
I AM will set you free
A fearful thing, to make demands of a Pharaoh
For Hebrew boys in the courts of the king
Strengthen my heart, find your servant faithful
Without my God, I’ve got nothing to bring
With bold resolve, we march in and deliver it,
“Thus says the Lord, set my people free!”
But hardened hearts, filled with prideful insanity
Instead of truce, they choose tragedy
Instead of truce, he chose tragedy
I never thought, for a man without confidence
The Lord would use such a man like me
But now I see, in the light of deliverance
The strength of God in my weakness is seen
Four hundred years that my people have toiled here
Four hundred years in captivity
Now marching out to a land of prosperity
Now marching out, hear God’s people sing
We’re marching out, and you can hear us sing
I hear, I know, I see!
I hear, I know, I see!
I hear, I know, I see,
I AM has set us free!
I AM has set us free!
